Twenty years. Two people...
Directed by Lone Scherfig (director of An Education, Academy Award-nominated for Best Picture), the motion picture One Day is adapted for the screen by David Nicholls from his beloved bestselling novel One Day.
After one day together - July 15th, 1988, their university graduation - Emma Morley (Academy Award nominee Anne Hathaway) and Dexter Mayhew (Jim Sturgess, The Way Back, 21) begin a friendship that will last a lifetime. She is a working-class girl of principle and ambition who dreams of making the world a better place. He is a wealthy charmer who dreams that the world will be his playground.
For the next two decades, key moments of their relationship are experienced over several July 15ths in their lives. Together and apart, we see Dex and Em through their friendship and fights, hopes and missed opportunities, laughter and tears. Somewhere along their journey, these two people realize that what they are searching and hoping for has been there for them all along. As the true meaning of that one day back in 1988 is revealed, they come to terms with the nature of love and life itself.

I read the book and, like most people, loved it. I held off watching the film until now as so many people said it wasn't as good as the book. How right they were.
The actors are completely miscast, the costume/scenery/backdrops are completely wrong for the time. And where was the corking soundtrack to match? I graduated in Edinburgh and moved to London only a year later than the events in the book. Neither city looked or felt anything like they were protrayed in this film.
I know the whole point of the story is that it's one day each year in the life of the two characters but somehow the book seems to hold together well and form a proper story. Over the course of the narrative the characters develop into rounded (albeit not always likeable) indivduals. None of the characters came to life in the film and the whole thing was bitty and disjointed.
In the film it's impossible to care for either of the main characters - they are flat two dimensional nonentities. Emma's boyfriend is a caricature too far, and completely unrealistic.
This was a book, in the same way as Bridget Jones Dairy, that defined a generation and was evocative of a certain era in Britain. Unlike Bridget Jones Diary, the film was way off the mark and bore no resemblance to the places or the period.
Don't waste any time on this film.

I enjoyed this movie very much. I was however very glad that I had read the book first as there was a lot of detail from the book that was omitted. i will definitely watch it again.

The film is okay in itself but maybe don't bother if you've read the book because as usual the director has used their artistic licence to change a good book to supposedly make it more interesting for the viewer.

Having missed out on the film when it was first released, I was eager to watch this DVD and was not disappointed. It captures the exuberance and optimism of youth - two Edinburgh University graduates seeking to make their way in life - but also the underlying frustration and disappointment, as things don't always turn out the way you want. There is also the tension of the "Will they?/Won't they?" romance between Emma and Dexter, culminating in such poignant closing scenes. I had read criticism that Anne Hathaway's imposed "Yorkshire" accent and glamorous good looks made her unsuitable for the part of Emma, but I feel she makes a reasonable fist of it. Jim Sturgess, on the other hand, is very well cast as Dexter, who could easily break any girl's heart! A great film for a comfy night-in, but have the hankies at the ready!

You'll laugh, cry & dream a little while watching this movie. An absolutely brilliant story topped with 2 stellar performances from the leads.
